House of Worship — Speech Intelligibility in a Difficult Acoustic

House of Worship — Speech Intelligibility in a Difficult Acoustic
Acoustic Delta — Europe

In a historic church, clear speech is what lets a congregation follow the service — and the architecture that makes these buildings beautiful is also what makes them acoustically hard. Worshippers toward the rear could not follow the spoken word, and complaints were mounting.

The task

Deliver two things at once in a long, reverberant, stone space: even coverage of the whole nave, and intelligible speech from the readings and the celebrant, without the howl of feedback that a high-gain system invites in such a room.

What we did

We built a reinforcement system on Apart Audio loudspeakers and amplification, distributed so that energy reaches the far end of the church evenly rather than piling up near the front. A BSS BLU-series processor with feedback suppression manages gain and equalisation, and discreet Shure MX installation microphones capture the service cleanly.

Result

Speech that is now intelligible throughout the building, achieved with equipment that stays visually unobtrusive in a heritage interior.
